Coverings for foot and leg... Stockings in Late Colonial Maryland - Update

Every now and then, it's time to update a previous post when new information comes to light during research. That has happened and this post, while much remains the same, contains new information uncovered during research.

While there were some enterprising individuals in Annapolis who made attempts to open their own stocking manufactory in the Province, most stockings were imported from England. And like silks and woolens, outside of paintings, diaries, letters and newspaper advertisements, there is one very good source which provides some insight into the variety of hosiery which was imported into Annapolis, Maryland in the late Colonial period, the order books of merchants.

But first a look at one stocking manufactory located in Annapolis in the 1760s. On November 3, 1763, John Bail and Benjamin Beall advertised their stocking manufactory near the church in Annapolis, making all kinds of stockings for gentlemen and ladies as well as patterns for jackets and breeches. The Annapolis manufactory however seems to have been limited to making worsted and thread stockings. One very interesting product which they made in 1764 was a thread stocking with the word "AMERICA" in place of the clocking. According to David Ridgely, in his 1841 book "Annals of Annapolis", this manufactory was located on what was then Doctor Street, now Franklin Street, in a small brick building, though this exact location is unclear. With the death of Benjamin Beall, William Reynold, a hatter by trade who also operated a tavern on Church Circle at that time, took over the manufactory advertising his ownership and continuation of business on October 3, 1765. No further record of the stocking manufactory is found in the Maryland Gazette after that date.

From 1771 to 1775, the Annapolis merchant firm of Wallace, Davidson & Johnson imported hosiery, not only for their own store on the city dock in Annapolis, but also for their stores at Queen Anne, Nottingham and Pig Point, as well as for individual customer's special orders and other merchants doing business in other parts of the Province.

Other items were also listed among the hosiery orders as well. Breeches patterns, caps, money purses, mitts and gloves all were listed with these orders, so I have included them in this posting as well. Perhaps in the future they will get their own separate post, but for now, you will find them here.

Below is a partial transcription of the probate inventory of Benjamin Beall and the order books of Wallace Davidson and Johnson, showing the hosiery as well as when and for whom they were being ordered. Included are descriptions of type, color, amount, size and even price in many cases.

It is hoped that this will provide some interesting information for other researchers as well as reenactors and tailors.
